New York Gay Marriage Bill Rejected

New York lawmakers rejected a bill Wednesday that would have made their state the sixth to allow gay marriage, disheartening advocates already stung by a similar decision by Maine voters just last month.

The New York measure failed by a wider margin than expected, falling 12 votes short in a 24-38 decision by the state Senate. The Assembly had earlier approved the bill, and Gov. David Paterson, perhaps the bill's strongest advocate, had pledged to sign it... [x]

SMH. We shouldn't even be having this debate at this day & age. It's a damn shame that in 2009 we are still fighting to have the same rights as everyone else. *sighs* I guess this is just another obstacle that we shall soon overcome. I hope that in my lifetime, I get to see equality for all in the United States of America.

More On Prop 8...

Celebrities are speaking out against the passing of Prop 8:

Sophia Bush
"It's just so sad that when we've been so progressive, we've also taken so many steps backward," she said, choking up. "I'm disgusted.

"In a world that is so full of hatred and bigotry and war and famine? We're criticizing two people for loving each other. I think that it's devastating."

Samantha Ronson
"I guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man, that's really sad to me,” ‘People’ magazine quoted her, as saying on her MySpace page.

“Yes, I am glad that the chickens will have more room and better conditions as they wait to die, but I just think it's frightening that people show more compassion for tomorrow's dinner than for the chef,” she said.

Ronson’s outrage comes after California voters approved intention of freeing chickens from small cages, but rejected legalizing gay marriage in Florida and California and adoption for gay parents in Arkansas.

“Yup, Miss Piggy and Chicken Little may rest easy, but gay people in Florida and California can no longer get married and gay couples in Arkansas can't adopt children," Ronson stated.

"God forbids a loving family (regardless of sexual orientation) give a needy child a home!" she added.

Madonna
"I am sorry we did not win Proposition 8. If we can have an African-American in the White House, we can have gay marriage," insisted the 50-year-old pop star who is divorcing her husband British director Guy Ritchie.

Christina Aguilera
"Last night, there was a whole rally that I saw for Prop. 8," she told MTV News. "A lot of people came out with their signs, and I think [Prop. 8] is discrimination and I don't understand how people can be so closed-minded and so judgmental. We chose an African-American president, and it means so much ... [it's] a time in history of great change and open-mindedness. Why is this any different? It just doesn't make sense to me. Why you would put so much money behind something [aimed at] stopping from people loving each other and bonding together? I just don't understand it. It's hard for me to grasp. But I would've been out there with my rally sign as well."

Melissa Etheridge

Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.

When did it become okay to legislate morality? I try to envision someone reading that legislation "eliminates the right" and then clicking yes. What goes through their mind? Was it the frightening commercial where the little girl comes home and says, "Hi mom, we learned about gays in class today" and then the mother gets that awful worried look and the scary music plays? Do they not know anyone who is gay? If they do, can they look them in the face and say "I believe you do not deserve the same rights as me"? Do they think that their children will never encounter a gay person? Do they think they will never have to explain the 20% of us who are gay and living and working side by side with all the citizens of California?

I got news for them, someday your child is going to come home and ask you what a gay person is. Gay people are born everyday. You will never legislate that away.

George Takei

Whoopi Goldberg
If you don't believe in gay marriage, don't marry a gay person.

Prop 8

It is a sad day for us homosexuals in America. In the midst of having our first ever African American president, we were informed yesterday that the same-sex marriage ban, other wise known as Prop 8, has passed in Florida, Arkansas and Arizona. Even more depressing is the fact that California, a state where gay marriages are were legal, also approved the proposition (with about 52% of the votes) which means that gay marriages will no longer be allowed in the state.

Strategist Jeff Flint had this to say about the outcome:
"I think the voters were thinking, well, if it makes them happy, why shouldn't we let gay couples get married. And I think we made them realize that there are broader implications to society and particularly the children when you make that fundamental change that's at the core of how society is organized, which is marriage."

What the fuck are you celebrating? Gays can't marry now so you're life is so much better?

Proposition 8 calls for the restriction of marriage to "one man and one woman," and unfortunately for us, that means we're restricted. =/ In all honesty, I just can't grasp the concept; why does it bother people so much? Why does it bother them to the point where they have to protest and come up with propositions to TAKE AWAY OUR RIGHTS? Why? Why are you not worried about the criminals, the rapists or the child molesters, if you're really worried about "children" and family unity? Why is the bible used to justify discrimination against a selective few? Why, in a country as diverse as ours, with so many religious backgrounds, does ONE religion conquer all? What ever happened to freedom of religion? Separation of church & state? Equality? How is ignorance so vehemently prevalent in this country? This seriously sucks. I'm so saddened. I need a drink. Seriously.

History Has Been Made!

Words cannot express the way I'm feeling right now. I am in awe; shocked; ecstatic; America has elected Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States. I'm so proud to have been able to be a part of this historic moment, that will never be forgotten.

I was at work when I received the text from my best friend that read "OMG, WE DID IT! HE WON! BARACK OBAMA HAS BEEN ELECTED PRESIDENT!" I swear to you, within five seconds the entire college campus went nuts. Students stormed out their dorms and apartments and started screaming and chanting "Obama" in celebration of Obama's victory. I have never in my life felt so grateful to be an American. I was almost driven to tears; seeing hundreds and hundreds of students running around with their Obama posters and signs displaying their excitement. I joined in on the pandemonium. It's a moment I will never forget, the day change won and history was made and I was a part of it.

Congratulations! We did it! We actually did it! History has been made.

A Change Is Coming...

The day has finally arrived. Oh my God.

In three hours I will be on my way back to my town to cast my vote for the next president of the United States. This is a defining moment in history that I've been eagerly awaiting to participate in. I cannot wait till 2...3...4am when they (hopefully) declare Obama as the 44th president of the United States of America. It's been a long time coming, it's been a tough, yet exciting, journey filled with many ups and downs, even a few close calls, but guys I just know that the change has come.

I don't have to convince anyone to vote; you're either going to do it or you're not. I heard a lot of students on campus yesterday talking about how they were not going to "waste" their time voting when their "votes don't really count." Unfortunately, I don't have the time to address ignorance, but I just hope that most of us young folks, who are registered and eligible to vote, actually walk the walk today and vote. History is at our fingertips. We got this.

And as for Mr. Bush, you're time as a president of the United States has finally come to an end. The only thing I thank you for is for showing the world that you were an inadequate president and that we can not afford to have another "you" in office ever again. Bye bitch.

I'm about to go make me some coffee and get ready for my long, sleepless day ahead. Are you ready? I sure as hell am.

Anti-Obama Billboard

I guess they're going to do whatever they can to lure voters away from Mr. Obama. Shocking? A little bit. Effective? I don't think so.

Sarah Palin Says "Homosexuality is a Choice"

I really can't stand this lady. I can go on & on & on about why I dislike her so much but what's that point? Yea, she's inexperienced, clueless, an idiot and we can now add ignorant to the list as well.

The Republican vice presidential candidate recently sat down with Katie Couric and shared her views on homosexuality:

Palin: Well, it matters though, Katie, when the media gets it wrong. It frustrates Americans who are just trying to get the facts and … be able to make up their mind on, about a person's values. So it does matter.

But what you're talking about, I think, value here, what my position is on homosexuality and you can pray it away, because I think that was the title that was listed on that bulletin. And you know, I don't know what prayers are worthy of being prayed. I don't know what's prayers are going to be asked and answered. But as for homosexuality, I am not going to judge Americans and the decisions that they make in their adult personal relationships. I have one of my absolute best friends for the last 30 years happens to be gay, and I love her dearly. And she is not my "gay friend," she is one of my best friends, who happens to have made a choice that isn't a choice that I have made. But I am not going to judge people.

Should these comments come as a surprise? Mind you, this is the same woman who does not believe in evolution and global warming and wants to drill for oil in Alaska. Right. Of course she's going to believe that homosexuality is a "choice," what does she know? She has the nerve to say she's been "absolute best friends" with a gay woman yet shows no knowledge or understanding of what it is to be a homosexual, which is made obvious by her ignorant comments. Quite disturbing. I would like this woman to explain to me why anyone in their right mind would choose to be gay, why anyone would chose to endure the discrimination and cruelty many of us gays are subjected to. Please, Ms. Palin, explain to me how one's sexuality is something you can just "pray away."

She makes me sick to my stomach.

Katie Couric Interview With Sarah Palin

Portion of the Transcript from Interview

COURIC: But he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.

PALIN: He's also known as the maverick, though. Taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he's been talking about — the need to reform government.

COURIC: I'm just going to ask you one more time, not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation?

PALIN: I'll try to find you some, and I'll bring them to you.

Wow, how dumb can she be? This is who you want in the White House? She sounds so lost and clueless and is clearly unprepared for this interview, let alone become vice president of the United States.

Thanks to Proctor for the video.

Brad Pitt Donates $100,000 To Fight Gay Marriage Ban

Brad Pitt announced Wednesday that he's donating $100,000 to fight California's Proposition 8, a November ballot initiative that would eliminate same-sex couples' right to marry.

"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8," the actor said in a statement.

Pitt's donation marks the largest thus far to the anti-Prop. 8 campaign by an A-list celebrity.

Political strategist Chad Griffin, who is helping coordinate efforts in the entertainment industry to defeat the controversial initiative, said he is hopeful that the move will prompt others to get involved. He added that Democratic billionaire Ron Burkle has agreed to host a large fundraiser at his home in October to rally the entertainment industry against Prop. 8, which opponents say will take away important benefits such as health insurance and will complicate decision-making related to medical emergencies and other situations in domestic partnerships.

In recent weeks, tens of thousands of dollars -- much of it from outside California -- has been donated to groups on both sides of the issue.

The measure was placed on the ballot after the California Supreme Court invalidated the state's prohibition on same-sex marriage in May. [x]

It feels so good to see huge public figures like Brad Pitt (and Charlize Theron among others) getting involved in issues like this. How nice of him <3. I'm a have a fit if this ban actually goes into effect.

Pink Doesn't Like Palin Either

In her 2006 song 'Dear Mr. President,' Pink asked George W. Bush a few probing questions. Now she's got some choice words for a certain vice presidential candidate.

"If I were writing a letter to Sarah Palin," Pink told PopEater during her Sessions taping on Thursday, "it would be a lot of whys and hows. Who are you? Do you know? Why do you hate animals? Please point out Iraq on a map ..."

What scares Pink are women who consider the Alaska governor's selection a feminist victory. "This woman hates women," the singer said. "She is not a feminist. She is not the woman that's going to come behind Hillary Clinton and do anything that Hillary Clinton would've been capable of ... I can't imagine overturning Roe vs. Wade. She's not of this time. The woman terrifies me."

Pink, an animal rights activist, suggests creatures other than humans should be just as scared of Palin: "I can't imagine shooting a wolf out of a helicopter." [x]

Ah... I can't love this woman anymore than I already do. So fucking true.

Matt Damon Doesn't Like Palin... Neither Do I

I agree with the man 100%. Not only is Palin not prepared to be a VP, but considering McCain's age, can you imagine Palin as the president of the United States of America? I think not.

Vin Diesel Endorses Dominican President

Vin Diesel has stopped chasing bad guys long enough to endorse the president of the Dominican Republic for re-election.

Diesel appears in a Dominican campaign commercial urging a vote for his friend, President Leonel Fernandez. The endorsement first aired Wednesday on local TV stations and is paired with movie clips that show Diesel running, driving and surviving a bomb explosion.

The 40-year-old actor says he visits the Dominican Republic about once a year and owns a home on the country's eastern coast.

About 5.7 million of the Dominican Republic's 9 million people are registered to vote in the May 16 general elections. Fernandez is running against construction magnate Miguel Vargas Maldonado. [x]

The commercial is sooo cheesy. It looks like Vin was just paid to say all that for the sake of having a celebrity in the commercial. That being said, I am from the Dominican Republic and I've seen Vin over there a handful of times and I know he lives in the country. As far as Fernandez is concerned, he's the best president the Dominican Republic has had in a while and I don't think Miguel Vargas is going to do shit for the country. Leonel is going to win this one without a doubt in my mind.

Will.I.Am Readying Second Barack Obama Video With Help From Beyonce

Will.I.Am Readying Second Barack Obama Video -- Possibly With Beyonce's Help

George Lopez, John Leguizamo have already recorded vocals for 'We Are the Ones.'

Two weeks after Barack Obama delivered his "Yes We Can" speech in Nashua, New Hampshire, the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am assembled an all-star cast of musicians and actors (including Common, John Legend and Scarlett Johansson) to appear on his "remix" of the speech and the accompanying video, an arty, black-and-white clip that quickly became a YouTube sensation, racking up more than 4 million views.

Now, two weeks after Obama delivered another speech — this one from his hometown of Chicago, after a triumphant Super Tuesday in which he won 14 states — Will is at it again, booking time in a Los Angeles studio to record yet another pro-Obama tune.

"Right now, since we're in the early stages, I think the song is gonna be called 'We Are the Ones.' It's inspired by a line in his speech after Super Tuesday, when he was in Chicago: 'We are the ones we have been waiting for,' " he told MTV News. "It lit another inspirational fire in me when he said that in his speech. So I decided to get to work on another track. We're lining up people to appear on it right now, and that's the easy part, because people are just passionate to want to be a part of it. There's no casting ... the inspiration is the casting director."

Though the "Ones" project is still in the early stages, MTV News heard a snippet of the song, and, in keeping with the spoken-word feel of his "Yes We Can" track, it's pretty minimal: little more than some Rhodes piano chords, some "We Will Rock You" handclaps and a chanted chorus of "O-Ba-Ma! O-Ba-Ma!"

"I kept it real simple and bare to the bones because it's really more about what people are saying," Will said.

So far comedians/actors George Lopez and John Leguizamo have recorded spoken parts for the track, and a publicist for the project told MTV News Jessica Alba, Ryan Phillippe, Ben McKenzie, Macy Gray and the Black Eyed Peas' Tabu are slated to participate. And rumor has it that Beyoncé is trying to clear up her schedule to make an appearance too. The whole thing is coming together with a spur-of-the-moment kind of feel (in the studio, Will was collaborating with a New York-based percussionist via online chat service Skype), and it looks like that's the way it'll be until the song is finished.

"I'm here in the studio, doing the new Obama song, then I leave tonight, head straight for the airport, take the files with me on the airplane, and I'll be finishing my part of the song in the air," Will explained. "When I land — every airport has Internet — then I'll send what I did on the airplane back to have them edit the video, so then in 24 hours, half the video will be done."

It seems like an awful lot of work for a guy who hasn't even been contacted by Obama's campaign. "I don't expect to. If I did, I would be worried. ... If the phone call comes in, like, 'Hey, this is Barack Obama, I want to talk to you,' I'd be like, 'Uh, hey dude. You should be running for president. I'll talk to you later,' " Will laughed. But he sees it as his civic duty, his chance to sway potential voters and get them interested in the candidate that Will thinks can change everything, the candidate that has personally inspired him.

"When we were in high school, junior high and elementary, they made us recite speeches: 'Four score and seven years ago,' 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.' And we remember those lines, it was part of our homework," he said. "And these kids nowadays, there's no one in the political world that says anything that kids want to recite. It's all fear tactics and things like that. Agendas that go over kids' heads. ... But here's this man named Barack Obama, who, for the first time in a long time, is gonna be part of [kids'] homework assignments to recite these words.

"And there's a lot of skeptical people out there who say, 'Well, those are just words.' But I say, 'When was the last time words didn't mean anything? When was the last time you didn't use words to define how you felt, or describe the things you want to achieve?' " he continued. "Words are powerful. Words and images together are powerful. Words, music and images are even more powerful. So I wanted to do my part with the 'Yes We Can' song, and the result of that has inspired me to no end. The youth in America is waking up. The slumber is gone. We can't continue to do things in the dark, now that someone has turned on the light. ... It's beautiful." [x]

Beyonce? Getting political? No way. Well, it doesn't come as THAT much of a surprise considering she donated money to Obama's campaign. Good girl. It's good to see celebrities stepping outside their fantasy worlds to deal and talk about the important issues such as the presidential campaign.

Clinton Mocks Obama

How desperate.
